Two entries in one day, it's a miracle isn't it?
Well besides posting my wrestling PPV predictions, I have in the past done some 'what if?' sports scenarios. Well I'm going to be doing another one in the last part of December and it will deal with the greatest topic in sports, year in and year out...a College Football playoff. And I have decided to do something about it. So from today to January 1, I will be posting the results of simulated games connected to a 64-team playoff tournament.
The inspiration comes from Mike Leach, head coach of Texas Tech, and from CBSSportline.com which is doing a feature of this particular what if themselves.
The set up is fairly straight forward, agreeing with CBSSportsline approach that all conference champions and teams with winning records (regardless of conference) receive invites first then 0.500 teams then get invited to fill out field afterwards. Since there were 59 teams with winning records that meant only five 6-6 teams made the field (North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Kentucky, and Colorado State).
For seeding purposes I used the College Football Ranking Comparison(
http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm) which uses 104 ranking systems to make a list of the 120 Division IA teams ranking them 1-120. Taking the top 64 teams that fall under the following categories--1) Conference champions), 2) Winning Record, 3) 0.500 record--the field was created.
Creating the Bracket was a bit of a challenge as I went by the following standards- 1) No rematches in the 1st Round, 2) No conference rematches or match-ups until the Sweet Sixteen. Going by the 'curve' method of allotment of the teams I divided the field into Knute Rockne, Paul Bryant, Eddie Robinson, and Walter Camp Regions. Then eliminated any conference matches before the Sweet Sixteen by switching teams on the same line as much as possible then eliminated rematches in the 1st Round by switch teams on the line as much as possible.
Some of the interesting developments is that Navy by the straight 'curve' method would have been a 10-seed, however because of both the conference & rematch rules moved up to a 9-seed while Rutgers was pushed down from a 9-seed to a 10-seed. Nevada by the 'curve' method was to be the highest ranked 14-seed but moved up to a 13-seed while Vanderbilt, the lowest 13-seed went down to the highest 14-seed.
Thus these are the following complete regions listed 1 vs. 4 then 2 vs. 3
Rockne Region Camp Region
1) Oklahoma 1) USC
16) Louisiana Tech 16) Hawaii
8) Northwestern 8) North Carolina
9) Clemson 9) Navy
4) Georgia Tech 4) Georgia
13) South Florida 13) Rice
5) Missouri 5) Florida State
12) Tulsa 12) East Carolina
6) Boston College 6) Oregon State
11) Arizona 11) Connecticut
3) Boise State 3) Oklahoma State
14) Notre Dame 14) Vanderbilt
7) Ball State 7) Iowa
10) South Carolina 10) Rutgers
2) Utah 2) Texas Tech
15) Minnesota 15) Kentucky
Bryant Region Robinson Region
1) Florida 1) Texas
16) Colorado State 16) Fresno State
8) West Virgina 8) California
9) Kansas 9) Wake Forest
4) Oregon 4) Cincinnati
13) Western Michigan 13) Nevada
5) Pittsburgh 5) Virgina Tech
12) NC State 12) Wisconsin
6) BYU 6) Michigan State
11) LSU 11) Maryland
3) Ohio State 3) Texas Christian
14) Buffalo 14) Troy
7) Nebraska 7) Mississippi
10) Air Force 10) Miami (FL)
2) Alabama 2) Penn State
15) Central Michigan 15) Houston
Potentially there are some great match-ups in later rounds particularly Florida vs. Alabama in the Bryant Regional Final after an Alabama vs. Ohio State Bryant Regional Semifinal. Also Utah vs. Boise State in the Rockne Regional Semifinal is a potential match-up along with Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State in the Camp Regional Semifinal. However they all have to get through other opponents as well to even set up such match ups.
How will this tournament go down you might ask? Well thanks to WhatIfSports.com simulation website, all these match-ups can take place. The first five rounds will be played at the higher seeded team's (regardless of conference membership) home field. The National Championship Game will be the 2009 Rose Bowl. The National Semifinalists will go to the Orange Bowl, the Regional Finalists will be split between the Sugar and Cotton Bowls. The Regional Semifinalists will be divided up between the Fiesta, Capital One (Citrus), Liberty, and Sun.
The games from the first four rounds will go at 4 times: 12 noon, 3 pm, 6 pm, and 9 pm. The National Semifinals will take place at 4 pm and 8 pm while the Rose Bowl National Championship Game will occur at 8 pm January 1, 2009.
I will be posting the game results scheduled for each time slot between 12-1, 3-4, 6-7, and 9-10 for the first four rounds. I hope you all enjoy and please comment.
