BOSTON-- The Bruins and Canadiens scored a combined 6 goals in the first 13:13 of the game including a 'natural' hat trick by the Canadiens' Steve Shutt for a 3-3 game that lasted during a penalty filled, goaltending duel that ended with a powerplay goal by the Bruins' Fran Stanfield to take a 2-1 series lead. The Bruins' Gerry Cheevers had a 25 for 28 performance outdid the Canadiens' Ken Dryden's 34 for 38 performance. The top-seeded Canadiens who swept their first round opponents are now finding the competition tougher.

The Islanders' gained a 2-1 series advantage looking for an upset of the higher seeded '43-44 Cup champions.
